The game was originally named vingt-et-un, which is 21 in French, adding even more fuel to the French fire when it comes to who created the popular casino game.
The game’s name was changed from its French/Italian origins to Blackjack in the 1900’s, as, at the time, the player got a bonus if an ace of spades was followed with a jack of either suit of clubs or spades – leaving the player with a score of 21, and of course a ‘Black Jack’ card.
The dealer’s average hand in Blackjack is a little over 18. That means, if you were to use a hand that’s value came to 18 every time; you would eventually lose your money. Dealer’s also have a distinct advantage in that they get to play their hand last, so they know what they need to do in order to beat the players still in the game on the table. It is for this reason that players are almost guaranteed to lose more times than they win in an average of 100 hands.
Blackjack is considered by many to be a one-player game. While most assume that you are facing the dealer in a bid to win the hand, the aim of the game is to simply get the highest total and stay below, or even with, the total of 21. If the game was played without bets and for fun, then technically anyone still in the game at the end who isn’t bust would be considered a winner.
